SSP054 Get Paid for Public Speaking with Orly Amor

Orly Amor:

You need to be intriguing these days. You need to be a little bit different because if there’s a life coach, there’s 100 of them. If there’s a business coach, there’s 100 of them. If there’s a healer, there’s a bunch of healers. They’re all there. What’s missing in this industry in variety, diversity, and women speakers as well. Very much in demand.

Steve Coombes:

You’re listening to public speaker and public speaking coach Orly Amor. Orly has made it her business to help anyone who wishes join this $100 Billion industry to become a successful paid public speaker. And you’re about to hear how you can become a paid public speaker too, because Orly is today’s guest on Solopreneur Success.

Steve:

Hello, solopreneurs. Today, I’m interviewing Orly Amor, an exciting public speaker in her own right, but more importantly for you, a premier business coach for public speakers, and today we’re going to talk about how you can make a mint in public speaking, and even if getting up on stage terrifies you, by the end of today’s episode, you just might have second thoughts about leaving public speaking on your skillset. So, we’re going to get right into it. Orly, welcome to the show today.

Orly:

Thank you for having me, Steve.

Steve:

So glad you joined me today. I want to get right to the meat of the matter. What’s the big deal about public speaking? Everybody thinks it’s great to be a public speaker. Not everybody is, and those who are public speakers aren’t really doing a whole lot with it often. So, what is the big deal about public speaking and why are so many people just scraping by to try to make a living doing it?

Orly:

Great and very loaded question. This industry is known for being the number one, if you will, or the 100% return on your investment, as far as marketing yourself to get new clients as a coach or as an entrepreneur, and also as a public speaker, it’s a very lucrative business because it’s a $100billion a year industry. Most people don’t even know that, so whether it’s a solopreneur or an entrepreneur, or somebody that has a sales team, I mean the best way for them to get clients is through public speaking. Education is key. I think that’s what’s going on. There are 64,000 events a day in America that pay public speakers. You’re saying why are they scraping?

There’s two reasons why you don’t make money in this business. One is that you don’t know how and we cannot blame you for that. You don’t know what you don’t know, but the second one is that they’re lazy. Laziness is because they think that the old way, “somebody’s going to call me because I have a book or because I have a website or because I’m on LinkedIn. Somebody is going to call me and hire me to speak,” and it doesn’t work that way anymore. It used to be more by referral and so on. Those days are long gone. 10 years now in the making, the industry has dramatically changed.

Steve:

You just mentioned two huge figures here. First of all you just said a 100 billion, with a B, dollar industry. Now that’s huge. I mean that’s a monster.

Orly:

That’s worldwide. Events that pay public speakers. We’re talking about just those. We’re not talking about concert and film festivals or anything like that. We’re talking about conferences and meeting planners that do this business for a living.

Steve:

So, you don’t have to be Tony Robbins to make a reasonable income, it sounds like.

Orly:

Absolutely. You don’t have to be Tony Robbins. In fact, Tony Robbins is the Tony Robbins name since 20/30 years now. I mean, he’s made a name for himself. He was one of the pioneers with Jim Rohn and all these guys because those, Les Brown, those guys don’t really need to go after events. They basically can do their own events and everybody will show up.

Steve:

Right but there’s a grand demand for speakers, and you just said the other figure I was going to point out because I don’t want to gloss over this. This is huge: 64,000 paid events. Let’s talk about for a minute. What does that mean exactly, 64,000 paid events?

Orly:

There 64,000 events per day that pay public speakers in America, and what I mean by America is just North America – the United States and Canada are the only ones calculated in this number. Actually, the number is a lot higher now. It’s about in the 74,000, but let’s stick to the 64,000. Were still in a very high number and there’s no reason for speakers not to make money in this industry. There’s plenty to go around.

Steve:

And some of these events are going to have multiple speakers. That’s 74,000 minimum speakers being paid every single day of the year.
